At least 30 students and one teacher were rushed to hospital on Wednesday following a gas leakage at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The incident occurred shortly after the morning assembly when a gaseous substance suddenly spread across the school premises, causing many students and staff to struggle for breath.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as several students began collapsing due to the effects of the gas.More than 30 students, along with a teacher, were immediately taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital for treatment. While some accounts suggested the gas may have originated from the school laboratory, others pointed to a possible source within the surrounding community.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed the incident, describing it as a gas leakage.“Some say it was from the school laboratory, but some say it must have been from somewhere around the community,” Oresanya said.“We are bringing a gas analyzer there now to analyze the type of gas and the concentration zone. So, that will give us the exact cause.”The commissioner ruled out industrial pollution as a possible cause.“
There is no industrial gas around, so we know it’s not an industrial pollution,” he stated. He also dismissed rumours of an explosion at the school.“No, there is no explosion anywhere. It’s a gas leakage from somewhere. No explosion,” Oresanya emphasised.
Confirming the number of victims, the commissioner said 30 students were hospitalised but are now in stable condition.“30 students, yes, were brought to the hospital, but they are in stable condition now. They are very okay now,” he added.
The affected individuals are reported to be responding well to treatment. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the precise source and nature of the gas.
