2027: You Must Contest — Nigerian Youths, CSOs Tell Ex-President Jonathan

A large coalition of Nigerian youths and civil society organisations on Wednesday stormed the Abuja office of former President Goodluck Jonathan, demanding that he contest the 2027 presidential election to “rescue” the country.

The protesters, who took over parts of the capital city, chanted slogans and displayed placards with messages such as “GEJ: Nigeria is dying, save it!”, “GEJ, Nigerian youths break the medicine wey dem do you,” and “GEJ, if you don’t run, we quench.”

Speaking on behalf of the group, public analyst and former Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Tom Ohikere, said the protest followed a six-month nationwide consultation during which the demand for Jonathan’s return was overwhelming.

“Everywhere that we have visited in the course of our nationwide consultation over a period of six months, the clamor for his return to power to rescue our country has been loud and unmistakable,” Ohikere stated.

The group waited for over three hours hoping to meet with Jonathan, who was not available at the time. As of the time of filing the report, the former president had yet to issue any official response to the calls.

The demonstration adds to growing pressure from various groups across Nigeria and the diaspora urging Jonathan to throw his hat into the ring for the 2027 race.

The development comes amid intense political realignments and opposition activities, including the ongoing leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and protests by opposition figures at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters.

Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, has remained largely silent on his political future since leaving office.
