Zamfara Education Commissioner Resigns Over Gov Lawal’s Defection to APC

The Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, has resigned his position following Governor Dauda Lawal’s decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Madawaki, who was a former aspirant against Lawal for the PDP governorship ticket in 2022, confirmed his resignation in a telephone interview, stating clearly that his decision was solely due to the governor’s move to the APC.

“I only resigned because the Governor is joining the APC. I’m a PDP member. I’ve never been an APC and I’m not ready to be an APC member,” he said.

He added that there was no pressure from the governor, noting that Lawal had explicitly stated during a stakeholders’ meeting that no one would be forced to join the new party.

Madawaki described his resignation as an honourable step in line with his political loyalty.Governor Dauda Lawal has accepted the resignation.

The Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, announced that the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, has been directed to oversee the Ministry of Education in an acting capacity with immediate effect.

The development comes days after Governor Lawal, his deputy Mani Mummuni, and several other PDP members defected to the APC, citing protracted legal crises and internal disputes within the PDP as reasons for the move.

Madawaki’s exit further weakens the PDP structure in the state, as the party is now left with fewer key officials in the executive council.
