Zamfara Assembly Speaker, 12 Other PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC

The Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Isma'il Moriki, along with 12 other lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made during an extraordinary sitting of the House in Gusau, presided over by Speaker Moriki. In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bello Madaro Kurya, the Speaker declared that the decision was unanimous, driven by ongoing leadership disputes and crises within the PDP.

Speaker Moriki read out resignation letters from the PDP for all defecting members, emphasizing that the entire House totaling 13 lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader along with their teeming supporters who voted them in during the 2023 general elections, are now joining the APC.

He commended constituents for their continued support and pledged to keep serving the people effectively under the new platform.

This mass defection follows closely on the heels of Governor Dauda Lawal's switch from the PDP to the APC earlier in March 2026, a move that has triggered further realignments in the state's political landscape, including the recent exit of the PDP state chairman.

The defecting lawmakers are expected to be formally received into the APC on Tuesday alongside Governor Lawal in Gusau.

The development reflects deepening political shifts in Zamfara, as more PDP figures align with the ruling party at both state and federal levels.
