Two young girls have died in a fire at their family home in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The fire occurred on March 18, 2026, at No. 1 Olaribigbe Street, Zion Area.
In a statement signed on Saturday by Ondo State Police Command, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, revealed that a full-scale investigation has commenced into a tragic fire that claimed the victims, who were identified as Queen Ohwo, aged six, and Everlyne Ohwo, aged four, daughters of Mr and Mrs Ohwo Peter.
The children’s remains, described as “severely burnt,” were evacuated to the Health Centre in Ode-Aye. The statement added that the parents “were found to be in deep shock and trauma.”
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by negligence during cooking activities.
However, CP Adebowale Lawal has ordered “a thorough and discreet investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak.”
The Divisional Police Officer in Ode-Aye has been instructed to “cordon off the scene, obtain statements from relevant witnesses, and collaborate with the Federal Fire Services to determine the extent and origin of the fire,” the statement said.
The Police Command expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged the public to exercise caution.
It highlighted key fire safety measures: “Never leave cooking unattended, especially when children are around; keep flammable materials away from cooking areas and open flames; ensure children are not left alone in homes where fire or heat sources are in use; have basic fire safety tools, such as fire extinguishers or buckets of sand/water, readily available; and educate household members, especially children, on fire hazards and emergency response.”
CP Lawal also thanked the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his “unwavering support, morale-boosting leadership, and invaluable guidance,” noting that “the IGP’s consistent encouragement and strategic direction have continued to inspire officers and men of the Command to remain steadfast, professional, and committed to duty.”
“The support has greatly strengthened the security of lives and property of the good people and residents of Ondo State,” the statement concluded.
