Tunji Disu, the acting inspector-general of police, has
ordered commissioners of police (CPs) across the country to heighten security
measures in response to evolving geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
A statement issued on Sunday by Benjamin Hundeyin, force
public relations officer, said said the directive is part of proactive steps to
prevent any fallout from global developments.
Disu reassured Nigerians of the force’s “unwavering
commitment” to the protection of lives, property and national peace, noting
that Nigeria remains stable and its internal security situation is firmly under
control.
He directed CPs in the 36 states and the federal capital
territory (FCT), with particular attention to the north-west, north-east and
north-central zones, “to heighten surveillance and intelligence gathering,
strengthen collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, enhance
visibility policing around worship centres and public spaces, and swiftly
address any attempt by individuals or groups to exploit global developments to
incite unrest or sectarian tension”.
He said the move is aimed at preventing the importation of
external ideological or religious tensions into the country.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not
serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts. Any attempt to import external
ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full
weight of the law,” the statement reads.
Disu urged community leaders to continue promoting peaceful
coexistence and called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding,
while reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
