Trump asks Australian PM to grant asylum to Iranian women’s football team after anthem protest

US President Donald Trump has called on Australia to grant asylum to members of Iran’s national women’s football team, claiming the players could face danger if they return home.

Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social on Monday to reveal that he had spoken with Anthony Albanese, Australian prime minister, about the issue, adding that he was “on it”.

Iran’s women’s national team was drawn in Group A of the Asian Cup, where they played Australia, South Korea, and Philippines.

The whole team stood in silence and refused to sing the country’s national anthem in their first group match against South Korea on March 2, leading to anger and demands for punishment in the Persian nation.

Following their elimination, supporters surrounded the team bus in protest to allow the team to remain in Australia amid fears of death back home by propagandists.

They however, received support from Trump, who echoed their fears and appealed to the Australian prime minister to grant the team asylum.

“I just spoke to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, of Australia, concerning the Iranian National Women’s Soccer Team,” he wrote.

“He’s on it! Five have already been taken care of, and the rest are on their way.

“Some, however, feel they must go back because they are worried about the safety of their families, including threats to those family members if they don’t return.

“In any event, the Prime Minister is doing a very good job in this rather delicate situation. God bless Australia! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel started on February 28 and has entered its 10th day.

There are ongoing concerns of Iran featuring at the FIFA 2026 World Cup to be hosted by US, Mexico and Canada.
