Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated assault by ISWAP terrorists on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mandaragirau, Sector 2, Borno State, neutralizing 38 insurgents in the process.
According to a statement from Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday. The terrorists launched what was described as a “half-hearted” multi-front assault on the base.
Troops responded swiftly with a well-coordinated offensive-defensive operation, forcing the insurgents into a disorderly retreat. The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided crucial air support and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) to enable precise strikes. Pursuing forces then engaged the fleeing terrorists along their withdrawal routes, inflicting additional casualties.
Eight bodies were recovered at the immediate engagement site, while human intelligence from local residents and corroborating evidence, including blood trails and abandoned equipment confirmed over 30 more insurgents killed along the Garin Mallum–Garin Gajere axis leading into the Timbuktu Triangle.
The troops recovered seven AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, four rocket-propelled grenade bombs, and assorted ammunition. No soldiers were killed in the encounter, though one Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle sustained damage from RPG fire. Injured personnel have been stabilized.
The significant losses inflicted on the terrorists have sparked jubilation among local communities. The military high command commended the troops for their gallantry and resilience, urging them to maintain operational tempo to secure the North-East region. Further exploitation operations are ongoing to recover additional bodies and consolidate gains.
