President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate requesting the confirmation of former Senator Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), along with two non-executive commissioners.
The letter, read during Tuesday's plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, nominates Abe, a former two-term senator representing Rivers South-East—to head the NUPRC following the resignation of previous chairman Gbenga Komolafe.
Also nominated as non-executive commissioners are:
Paul Yaro Jezhi, former chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Kaduna State
Sunday Adebayo Babalola, a former deputy director at the Department of Petroleum Resources
Senate President Akpabio has referred the nominations to the Senate Committee on Petroleum Upstream for screening and subsequent report to the full Senate.
This development is part of efforts to reconstitute the leadership of Nigeria’s key oil and gas regulatory bodies under the Petroleum Industry Act, aiming to strengthen governance and sector oversight.
The move has received positive reactions in some quarters, particularly for including experienced figures and ensuring representation from Rivers State in federal appointments. The Senate is expected to expedite the confirmation process to maintain continuity in upstream petroleum regulation.
