Three police officers, vigilante leader killed in Taraba bandit attack

The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed that three police officers and a local vigilante leader were killed in a bandit attack in the state.

According to a statement issued by the command on Thursday in Jalingo, the state capital, the incident followed a distress call from a resident of Tordamisa Akate Ward, who reported an attack on the village by armed men believed to be bandits.

Police authorities said a response team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Donga and supported by Special Force operatives, was immediately deployed to the area in a bid to restore order and safeguard residents.

Tragedy, according to the command, struck after a deadly confrontation between police operatives and suspected bandits in Tse Kwe Village, leaving three officers and a local vigilante leader dead.

According to the statement, “Upon arrival, the officers came under heavy gunfire from the attackers, leading to a fierce exchange. In the course of the operation, the police operatives engaged the bandits and successfully repelled the attack.”

The command identified Corporal Raphael Danjuma, Police Constable Ebenezer Daniel, and Police Constable Samuel Bawa as the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“Bawa had initially been declared missing before his body was later recovered in a nearby bush during a search operation,” the police confirmed.

The violence also claimed the life of Nutsa Tyav, 60-year-old chairman of the local vigilante group in Tordamisa Village, whose body was found after the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Betty Enepen Isokpan Otimenyin, expressed shock over the deaths, describing the fallen officers and vigilante leader as heroes who paid the ultimate price in the service of their communities and the nation.

While consoling the bereaved families, she assured them that the sacrifices of the deceased would not be in vain.

She noted that security presence in the affected area has since been reinforced, with ongoing operations aimed at tracking down and apprehending those responsible for the attack.

The police also appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid the investigation.
