Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has strongly condemned the Nigerian Federal Government's approach to handling terrorism, insisting that terrorists and their supporters merit execution rather than leniency or pardon.
In a pointed statement shared on his X account, Adeyanju called for an end to what he described as the government's practice of "forgiving and romancing terrorism." He argued that showing mercy to those involved in violent extremism only weakens national security and undermines ongoing efforts to restore peace."Terrorists and their sympathizers deserve death not forgiveness. The Nigerian government must stop forgiving and romancing terrorism," Adeyanju declared.
His comments appear to critique policies perceived as too soft on insurgents, including any programs or gestures that allow reintegration or forgiveness for perpetrators of terrorism and banditry, rather than strict prosecution.
The activist's remarks come amid recent government updates on military campaigns against insecurity. Defence Minister Christopher Musa, speaking to journalists after briefing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the security situation, emphasized that terrorists and bandits are now facing significantly heavier losses in ongoing operations across the country. He also addressed what he called misleading media reports about the conflict.
Adeyanju's position aligns with his longstanding criticism of perceived leniency toward terrorists, as he has previously argued that pardons or negotiations violate constitutional principles and indirectly support violence by rewarding criminals instead of deterring them.
The activist urged authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance, uncompromising stance to effectively combat terrorism and safeguard citizens' lives.
