Troops from Operation Desert Sanity, operating under the Joint Task Force North East (Operation Hadin Kai - OPHK), successfully repelled a daring terrorist attack on their position in the volatile Sambisa Forest early Sunday morning.
The incident unfolded around 2:20 a.m. when insurgents launched an attempt to overrun Special Forces troops conducting ongoing clearance operations in the area. According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama, the attackers were met with fierce resistance in a prolonged firefight.
The Nigerian troops effectively neutralized the assault, inflicting casualties on the terrorists while sustaining zero losses, no soldiers were killed or injured, and no military equipment was damaged during the engagement.
Post-repulsion exploitation of the battlefield revealed at least two terrorist corpses left behind, along with blood trails suggesting that the insurgents had evacuated additional dead and wounded fighters.
Recovered items from the scene included:
One PKT machine gun
Three rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) bombs
51 rounds of 7.62 x 51mm ammunition
108 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition
Two Baofeng communication radios
One Redmi Android mobile phone
Three Airtel SIM cards believed to belong to the insurgents
This latest encounter comes amid broader military gains in the northeast, including recent airstrikes that have targeted high-value insurgent commanders and logistics hubs in the same region. Security forces remain vigilant as efforts to restore peace and stability in Borno State persist.
