Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), commonly referred to as Shi’ites, staged peaceful protests in Yobe State on Tuesday to condemn the recent killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The demonstrations took place in Potiskum and Nguru Local Government Areas, where participants marched through the streets carrying Iranian flags and large portraits of Khamenei. They chanted slogans expressing solidarity with Iran and denouncing foreign interference in the country's affairs.
The protests were sparked by reports that Khamenei was killed on Saturday, February 28, 2026, during a large-scale joint U.S.-Israeli military operation targeting high-level sites in Iran. Iranian state media confirmed his death, and the Islamic Republic declared 40 days of national mourning in his honor.
Khamenei, who had led Iran for nearly four decades, was widely revered among Shi’ite communities worldwide. In Potiskum, local leader Abdullahi Hassan addressed journalists, stating: “We are here to protest the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is an attack on the dignity of Muslims globally, and no right-thinking person should accept it.”
He emphasized that the group would continue speaking out against actions that undermine national sovereignty and harm the Islamic world.A protest organizer in Nguru echoed similar sentiments, mourning the loss and urging peace-loving nations to condemn the act.
The marches remained peaceful, with no reports of violence or clashes. Similar demonstrations by Shi’ite groups have occurred in other northern Nigerian states, including Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Sokoto, reflecting broader outrage over the incident and its implications for regional stability.
