The Lagos state government has ordered a full investigation into the death of Elena Jessica, who passed away from severe complications following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure.
Jessica’s sister Nelli recently announced her death on
social media.
Nelli alleged that the medical procedure was performed at
Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Hospital in the Ikoyi area of Lagos. She
claimed the use of unsterilized tools culminated in her sister’s death.
She said Jessica underwent liposuction and fat transfer
surgery to her hips, buttocks, and calves on February 6, 2026.
Just two days after the procedure, Jessica reportedly began
experiencing intense pain and pronounced swelling in the areas treated.
Subsequent blood tests revealed a dangerously elevated white
blood cell count—indicating a serious infection—along with critically low blood
levels that required multiple transfusions.
In its response, the hospital claimed that Jessica had
previously undergone a procedure at another facility and had come to them
specifically for a “corrective procedure”.
Addressing the matter, Abiola Idowu, permanent secretary of
the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), confirmed
in a statement that the agency is investigating the incident.
Idowu noted that while the facility in question is
registered with the regulatory body, that registration “does not shield any
facility from investigation regarding patient’s safety”.
“The Lagos State Government, through the Health Facilities
Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has commenced a full
investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as
‘Elena,’ who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
cosmetic procedure at a clinic in the state,” the statement reads in part.
“The development follows reports circulating on social media
alleging that the young woman developed complications after the aesthetic
procedure, which reportedly occurred either during or shortly after the
surgery.
“While details of the incident are still being verified, the
State Government has assured the public that a thorough, professional, and
transparent investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances
surrounding the unfortunate event.”
