Schoolchildren, teacher escape death in Lagos road crash

Two students of Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe, and their teacher narrowly escaped death when the vehicle conveying them collided with a car along the Onipanu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered from a statement on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, that the accident occurred at about 6:00 p.m.

According to the perm sec, both vehicles were reportedly speeding when they collided on the expressway. The impact caused one vehicle to swing into the opposite lane, resulting in damage to both cars.

He stated, “The Honda Accord had a single occupant, while the Suzuki Alto carried three occupants—a teacher and two students of Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe. LASEMA is pleased to report that no fatalities occurred, and all occupants escaped without serious injury.

“Two students, Animashaun Ridwan (JSS 2) and Ogunbamowo Michael (JSS 2), reported head and eye discomfort. They were immediately attended to by our paramedics, stabilised, and administered first aid before being safely handed over to their parents.”

The teacher involved was identified as Mr Joseph, a Basic Technology teacher at the school.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that the victims were evacuated to safety, and the badly damaged Suzuki Alto was recovered using LASEMA’s Light Tow Truck to prevent a secondary accident. Both vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

He urged motorists across the state to exercise caution, observe speed limits, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.

“Reckless driving and speeding endanger lives and can lead to serious accidents. LASEMA calls on all road users to prioritise safety to prevent similar incidents and protect lives on Lagos roads,” the statement concluded.
