Russia has ordered the expulsion of a British diplomat from its Moscow embassy, accusing the official of working undercover as a spy for British intelligence services.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the move on January 15, 2026, stating it had received information linking the diplomat to the UK’s secret service. The individual’s diplomatic accreditation was revoked, and they were given two weeks to leave the country.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) identified the diplomat as Gareth Samuel Davies, a second secretary at the British Embassy, claiming he was an undeclared intelligence operative. Moscow emphasized that it would not tolerate such activities by British spies on Russian soil.
The UK Foreign Office dismissed the accusations as “malicious and baseless,” arguing that they undermine the fundamental conditions for diplomatic operations. Britain said it is carefully considering its response to the expulsion.
This latest incident adds to ongoing tensions between Russia and the UK. In March 2025, Russia expelled two British diplomats and the spouse of another on similar spying charges. The UK has responded in kind in the past with reciprocal expulsions.
The Kremlin has warned against further escalation, while London has described the claims as unprovoked and unjustified.
