A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Amobi Ogah, has presented a petition on the floor of the House urging the National Assembly to urgently intervene in what he described as alleged illegal quarry operations in Imobi Autonomous Community, Achara Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
The petition, submitted by the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Simeon Chukwuemeka, accuses a private company, identified in related reports as Limei International Company Nigeria Limited, of unlawfully conducting quarry activities on community land.
According to the complaint, the firm obtained a quarry lease license from the Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office in Abuja, covering nine cadastral units.
However, the license was allegedly secured using a fraudulent consent letter signed by unauthorized individuals. One signatory reportedly posed as the paramount ruler despite lacking any recognized traditional title.
The community had previously petitioned the Director-General of the Mining Cadastre Office and other relevant authorities to revoke the license, but it was granted despite these objections.
Eze Chukwuemeka further alleged that certain individuals within the community facilitated the operations.
Hon. Ogah, who represents the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency (and hails from Uturu), emphasized the potential risks, warning that the disputed activities could spark tension and lead to a breakdown of law and order in the area.
He called on the National Assembly to step in, ensure strict adherence to due process in the issuance of mining licenses, and safeguard the rights of host communities affected by such operations.
The House of Representatives has acknowledged receipt of the petition and referred it to the relevant committee for investigation and appropriate legislative action.
