PSC Rejects Allegations of Bribery in Police Promotions, Says Process Is Strictly Merit-Based

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has categorically denied recent claims that senior officers in the Nigeria Police Force paid bribes to secure promotions, describing the accusations as baseless, malicious, and aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Commission and the police force.

The allegations, originally reported by an online news platform, suggested that officers paid ₦5 million each to be elevated to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

The report cited purported internal police wireless messages and anonymous "insider sources" to imply a "pay-to-play" scheme in the promotion exercise from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to ACP.In a strong rebuttal issued on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the PSC dismissed the claims in their entirety as unfounded falsehoods.

Torty Njoku Kalu, Head of Protocol and Public Affairs for the PSC, stated that the Commission views the report as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and undermine institutional integrity. He emphasized that police promotions are conducted transparently and strictly on merit, in full compliance with statutory frameworks, Public Service Rules, and international best practices.

The PSC clarified that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) only forwards recommendations based on officers' performance and available vacancies, while final approval rests exclusively with the Commission. References in the report to internal messages were explained as routine administrative confirmations of approvals, containing no evidence of any financial transactions or impropriety.

The Commission has indicated it is considering legal action against the outlet (identified in related coverage as Sahara Reporters) for alleged defamation and reputational damage. It challenged the reporting platform to produce verifiable evidence rather than rely on anonymous claims.

The PSC reiterated its commitment to a fair and transparent promotion system that rewards discipline, professionalism, and dedicated service. It encouraged any officer or member of the public with credible evidence of misconduct to submit formal petitions directly to the Commission for thorough investigation, urging the public to disregard the misleading report.

This denial comes amid ongoing efforts to maintain public trust in the Nigeria Police Force through accountable and merit-driven processes.
