Preventing Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons Outweighs Rising Oil Prices - Trump

US President Donald Trump has declared that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons far outweighs concerns about surging global oil prices, even as the ongoing US-Iran war continues to disrupt energy markets and drive up costs worldwide.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Trump emphasized America's position as the world's leading oil producer, stating that higher oil prices actually benefit the US economy financially.

"The United States is the largest Oil Producer in the World, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money," he wrote.

"BUT, of far greater interest and importance to me, as President, is stopping an evil Empire, Iran, from having Nuclear Weapons, and destroying the Middle East and, indeed, the World. I won’t ever let that happen! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

The statement comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, where the US-Iran conflict now in its second week has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.

This has triggered one of the largest supply shocks in history, with Gulf producers slashing output by approximately 10 million barrels per day (nearly 10% of global demand).

Brent crude briefly surpassed $100 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate approached $96, before some easing.

In response, the International Energy Agency coordinated the release of 400 million barrels from emergency reserves, and the US announced plans to tap 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help stabilize markets.

Trump's remarks also included a reference to intensified military actions against Iran, noting, "We have hit them harder than virtually any country in history has been hit, and we’re not finished yet."

Despite earlier suggestions that the conflict could end "pretty quickly," his latest comments signal a continued hardline stance, downplaying risks of Iranian retaliation on US soil while reaffirming the priority of neutralizing Iran's nuclear capabilities.

The president's position has drawn mixed reactions, with some lawmakers criticizing the focus on potential profits from high oil prices amid economic strain on American consumers, while supporters view it as a necessary commitment to global security.

As the war shows no immediate signs of resolution, Trump's declaration underscores his administration's view that long-term threats from a nuclear-armed Iran represent a greater danger than short-term energy price volatility.
