Police structure in Nigeria outdated, designed for colonial control - Nyiam

A retired army officer, Mr Tony Nyiam, has described the current structure of the Nigeria Police Force as outdated, saying it was originally designed to control colonised people rather than serve citizens in a democratic society.

Nyiam made the assertion on Arise Television on Monday.

“The policing system inherited from the colonial era remains largely unchanged and is no longer suitable for modern Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the structure was created to enforce authority over the population during colonial rule, not to provide community focused security.

Nyiam argued that the highly centralised nature of the police force has limited its effectiveness in addressing the country’s growing security challenges.

The retired army officer stressed the need for a comprehensive reform of the policing system to align it with Nigeria’s federal structure and democratic principles.

He called on policymakers to review the current policing framework and adopt reforms that would make the system more responsive, accountable and capable of effectively protecting lives and property across the country.
