Oyo State Police have successfully re-arrested a 25-year-old suspected kidnapper who fled from custody just a week earlier, following an intensive manhunt and routine patrol operations.
The suspect, identified as Ayomide Kareem from Osorun’s Compound in Oyo, was originally detained at the Jobele Division in connection with kidnapping allegations. He escaped from custody on March 10, 2026, reportedly due to unprofessional conduct by some operatives involved.
The escape triggered widespread community protests and prompted swift action from the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna. He immediately ordered an intensive search for the fugitive and initiated disciplinary measures, including the detention of culpable officers for orderly room trials, the redeployment of the Jobele Divisional Police Officer, and other steps to enforce accountability and professionalism.
On March 17, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m., operatives from the Ojongbodu Area Command intercepted Kareem during a routine stop-and-search exercise at Irepo Junction in the Ojongbodu area. The suspect was spotted trekking suspiciously in the vicinity, and further checks confirmed his identity as the escaped suspect.DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Police Public Relations Officer for Oyo State, confirmed the re-arrest, stating that Kareem is now back in custody and assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries.
CP Haruna reiterated the command's commitment to public safety and security, assuring residents that authorities will not relent in pursuing criminals and upholding the rule of law. He urged the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and to provide credible information to aid police efforts.
