The federal government of Nigeria has fulfilled its housing pledge made to D’Tigress following their victory at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket.
In August 2025, D’Tigress became the first team to win the
Women’s Afrobasket five times in a row. The team defeated Mali 78-64 in the
final, which was held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.
Upon their arrival in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu,
represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, conferred the Officer of the
Order of the Niger (OON) award on every member of the roster.
A reward of $100,000 was also pledged to each of the players
and an additional $50,000 to members of the technical crew.
Each player and official on the team was also promised a
flat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The National Sports Commission (NSC) said the players have
received their housing documents and certificates of their national awards.
NSC said the players were handed the documents in Lyon,
France, where they are participating in the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying
tournament.
Speaking at the reception, Shehu Dikko, NSC chairman, said
the promised $100,000 cash reward is “almost in the final stage for
disbursement, and that too will soon drop in their respective bank accounts”.
