Peter Obi Slams Leaders for Ignoring Insecurity While Fixating on Elections

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticized Nigeria's political leaders for sidelining the escalating insecurity crisis and instead channeling their energies into preparations for the next general election.

In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, March 9, 2026, via his official social media account, Obi described the nation as "clearly under siege," with insecurity reaching unbearable levels and spreading nationwide.

He highlighted several recent incidents to underscore the gravity of the situation:In Borno State's Ngoshe community (Gwoza LGA), terrorists overpowered soldiers last Wednesday night, killing several military personnel and civilians while abducting more than 100 women and children.

Obi noted the silence from leaders on this attack and the sacrifices of soldiers, expressing hope for the day when fallen heroes receive dignified national burials.

In Nasarawa State's Kadarko area, 14,318 civilians are now registered as internally displaced persons due to terrorists occupying farms and forests.

Similar disruptions in Kogi and Benue states, where terrorists have taken over farmlands and forests, forcing villagers to flee and crippling economic activities.

Reports of attacks and abductions in Oyo, Ondo, and Kebbi states.

Even in the nation's capital, an attack in Kubwa, Abuja, this week resulted in the abduction of about 19 citizens, including women and children.

Obi accused the ruling class of being "devastatingly more preoccupied with how to snatch, grab, and run away with the next election," rather than addressing the daily slaughter, abductions, and displacement plaguing ordinary Nigerians."

These are not just news items. Nigerians deserve commitment and leadership that puts their safety and welfare first," he stated. "It is time to restore security, dignity, and hope to every corner of this nation."

The Labour Party stalwart's remarks come amid persistent security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings that have disrupted livelihoods and heightened public fear.

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has mourned the Ngoshe victims, visited affected families in Pulka, and pledged rescue efforts for the abducted.

No immediate response from federal authorities or other political figures has been reported regarding Obi's latest criticism as of March 9, 2026.

The statement reinforces Obi's recurring calls for governance focused on citizens' welfare over electoral politics, as Nigeria grapples with multifaceted crises ahead of the 2027 polls.
