Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has formally obtained his membership card of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in his home state of Anambra.
The event took place on March 6, 2026, at his hometown ward in Agulu, following the flag-off of the ADC's Membership Mobilization, Registration, Revalidation, and Inauguration of the Anambra State committee at the Hollywood Event Center in Awka.
Obi, who defected to the ADC late last year (officially declaring on December 31, 2025, in Enugu amid a broader opposition coalition move), participated in the party's grassroots efforts.
The registration exercise was part of a wider push to strengthen the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi personally receiving his party card after the state-level launch.
The move aligns with ongoing efforts to build a united opposition front under the ADC, which has seen a significant surge in membership in Anambra and other regions since Obi's entry.
State ADC leaders have previously noted massive influxes of new members, including former Labour Party supporters and lawmakers, attributing much of the growth to Obi's influence.
Obi has repeatedly emphasized that his political decisions, including the shift to ADC, are driven by patriotism and the need for a national coalition to address Nigeria's challenges such as poverty, insecurity, and democratic decline.
He has also reaffirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidency, undeterred by the ruling party's advantages.
The development comes as the ADC continues mobilization activities across states, positioning itself as a key vehicle for opposition forces.
