Kunle Remi, the Nigerian actor, has taken a swipe at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for how they present awards to winners, claiming the process falls short of international standards.
In a post via Instastory on Monday, the film star shared a
clip of Hollywood actor Michael B. Jordan receiving his ‘Best Actor’ trophy for
his performance in ‘Sinners’ at Oscars 2026 on Sunday.
In the video, Jordan’s award is seen being engraved with his
name on the spot immediately after his win.
Impressed by the seamless process, Remi compared it to what
he implied happens at the AMVCA.
He claimed that if it were at the AMVCA, the recipient would
not get the award plaque immediately but would have to return to collect it at
the next edition.
“So they engrave your name after you win! Right there. Take
it home! If na AMVCA, all of you will share one for the night then comeback and
collect it at the next award,” he wrote.
Despite his claims, winners at the AMVCA have historically
always received their plaques on stage, unless they were absent from the
ceremony.
It’s possible the actor may have confused the AMVCA with the
Headies, which recently had an awkward moment at its 2025 edition.
During the show, singer Shallipopi won the ‘Best Rap Single’
category but was only offered a handshake and no plaque after walking up to
receive his award.
This is not the first time the actor has called out the
AMVCA.
In 2023, Remi spoke about his omission from the AMVCA
nomination list despite his sterling performance as ‘Saro’ in ‘Anikulapo‘ — a
movie that snagged 16 nods.
