Suspected bandits have abducted seven members of a single family — including a pregnant woman, a nursing mother with her infant and four other children — after invading their household in Sabon Gero community, Chikun LGA of Kaduna.
The attack took place around midnight on Sunday, throwing
residents into panic as the gunmen rounded up the victims and marched them into
the bush.
One woman who escaped, Jamila Alhaji Ado, recounted the
ordeal.
“They came into the house at night and gathered us together
with our children and the other women, including a pregnant woman and a nursing
mother with her baby, and took us away,” she said.
Jamila said she told the abductors she could not continue
walking, but they forced her forward until she began falling.
“As we started moving, they noticed I was falling, so they
left me in the bush and continued,” she added.
Ado Idris, head of the family, said the bandits had demanded
ransom from him three weeks earlier.
“They called me about three weeks ago asking for money, and
I told them I had none,” he said.
He said the gunmen returned in the early hours of Sunday,
firing shots but missing him.
“They took my wives, including the pregnant one and the
nursing mother with her baby, and my other children. Right now, seven members
of my family are in their hands in the bush. I am appealing for help to rescue
them,” he said.
In the same operation, the attackers killed a vigilance
group member, Abdulrahman Lawal, at his shop.
A vigilance group leader, Aliyu Muktar, confirmed the
killing.
“The attackers were shooting after surrounding the area. He
struggled with one of them before they shot him,” he said.
Muhammadu Lawal, the deceased’s father, said his son died
from gunshot injuries while being rushed to hospital.
Mansir Hassan, spokesperson of the Kaduna police command,
said the incident is being probed.
