The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has imposed sanctions on a palace queen, certain chiefs, and other staff members following the unauthorized entry of popular social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, better known as Peller, into the royal palace.
In a statement released by the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) and signed by its secretary, Frank Irabor, the incident which took place on March 6, 2026—was described as a serious breach of protocol and a desecration of the palace's sacred grounds.
The council stated that Peller and his entourage accessed the premises without obtaining the required permission, leading to conduct that caused significant embarrassment and disrupted peace within the palace.Among those sanctioned:
A palace staff member, Mr. Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and faces court charges for allegedly abetting the unauthorized entry and causing a breach of the peace.
An implicated chief has been suspended indefinitely from palace duties.
The palace queen involved in the incident is now subject to serious disciplinary proceedings under Benin traditions and customs. These proceedings could potentially result in her removal from the palace.
The BTC emphasized the palace's status as the ancient spiritual seat of the Oba, governed by centuries-old traditions not a public space for casual visits or content creation.
Following the breach, the council invited Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs to present his side of the story, but he failed to honor the summons.
The statement further demanded that Peller submit an unreserved written apology to the palace for the unauthorized access and the distress caused. Failure to comply, the council warned, would leave no option but to pursue legal action against him.
The Benin Traditional Council reiterated its commitment to upholding the sanctity and protocols of the palace, viewing the incident with utmost gravity.
