NPC, Council of State to Confirm Acting IGP Disu Today

The Nigerian Police Council and the Council of State are scheduled to meet today (Monday) to ratify the appointment of Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji (Tunji) Disu as the substantive IGP, paving the way for Senate confirmation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who chairs both constitutional advisory bodies, has convened the meetings to consider Disu's nomination following his appointment last week as Acting IGP.

This comes after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. The Nigerian Police Council, responsible for the organization, administration, and general supervision of the Nigeria Police Force (excluding operational control), includes the President as Chairman, all state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP.

The Council of State comprises the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima (as Vice Chairman), former Presidents and Heads of State, current and former Senate Presidents and Speakers of the House of Representatives, current and former Attorneys-General, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and state governors.

If ratified by these bodies, Disu's name will be forwarded to the Senate for final confirmation, as required by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Police Act 2020.

The President's decision to expedite the process is reportedly linked to heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East between the United States and Iran, underscoring the need for the IGP to have full legal authority to protect Nigerian lives, make decisive operational calls, and maintain internal security vigilance.

Acting IGP Disu, who assumed duty last week, has already emphasized ending impunity, enforcing discipline, professionalism, and integrity within the Force.

He has directed commissioners nationwide to bolster intelligence gathering, surveillance, and collaboration with community leaders, particularly in vulnerable regions, to prevent any spillover of foreign conflicts into Nigeria.

Should he receive full ratification and Senate approval, Disu will become the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police since Nigeria's independence in 1960.

The development follows Disu's recent promotion to Assistant Inspector-General and his prior roles, including Commissioner of Police in the FCT and head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
