The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, has confirmed that Nigerians residing in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Iran have begun making enquiries about possible evacuation amid rising tensions in the region.
According to the commission, “several Nigerians have reached
out for guidance”, seeking clarification on whether the Federal Government has
plans to evacuate citizens if the situation worsens.
NIDCOM, however, stated that it has not received any
official distress calls from Nigerians in Iran, stressing that evacuation may
be difficult at the moment due to flight restrictions and security concerns.
The agency explained that ongoing hostilities and the
suspension of international flights in affected areas could hinder immediate
evacuation efforts, noting that “such operations would depend largely on
improved security conditions”.
The commission urged Nigerians in the affected countries to
remain calm, stay in safe locations, and maintain regular contact with Nigerian
embassies for updates and necessary guidance.
NIDCOM also emphasized the Federal Government’s
commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, assuring that necessary steps would
be taken if the situation escalates further.
