Peter Obi, 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), says Nigeria’s persistent poverty is largely a result of poor leadership and the veneration of public officials who loot state resources.
Obi spoke on Thursday in Abuja while receiving a delegation
of the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN) led by
its national president, Obijuru Everest.
According to a statement signed by Ibrahim Umar,
spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the former Anambra governor
said Nigeria’s vast natural and human resources should ordinarily place the
country among thriving economies.
Obi said the country’s economic struggles stem from
corruption and the failure to prioritise key sectors such as education and
healthcare.
“We are poor because we have chosen to be poor. We give
titles and front-row seats of honour to those who steal public funds, and yet
we expect to grow,” Obi said.
He recalled a conversation with political leaders in
Indonesia, noting that the country has made significant progress through
improved leadership and strategic investments.
Obi said he was advised to prioritise fighting corruption
and invest heavily in education and healthcare to drive economic growth.
He added that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the
backbone of any thriving economy and must be supported by a responsible
government that provides an enabling environment.
“Join the fight for a great Nigeria. Stop worshipping those
who steal your money, stop giving them titles, and stand up for what is right,”
he said.
“Vote, defend your votes, and help produce good leaders at
all levels, from councillor to president, and you will see the country change.”
