NDLEA, US DEA Deepen Collaboration to Combat Drug Cartels, Terrorism

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have strengthened their partnership to dismantle transnational drug cartels and disrupt the financing of terrorism and violent extremism through narcotics proceeds.

The commitment was announced on Tuesday during a bilateral strategic counter-narcotics workshop held at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), and DEA Country Attaché, Ms. Daphne Morrison, led discussions aimed at aligning both agencies’ efforts against shared drug-related threats impacting Nigeria, the United States, and the global community.

Marwa described the workshop as “strategic and timely,” saying it would result in a joint declaration of priorities and a coordinated 12-month action plan.

He stressed the dangerous nexus between drug trafficking and terrorism: “Drug proceeds have become a major source of financing for terrorist networks and violent extremist groups around the world. By attacking the drug trade, we are simultaneously starving the engines of terrorism.”

The NDLEA boss noted that Nigeria’s strategic location makes it vulnerable as a transit route for drugs heading to Europe, North America, and Asia, underscoring the need for stronger international cooperation.

Marwa assured that the NDLEA remains fully committed to the partnership, adding that Nigeria will lead the implementation of agreed actions within its territory.

“The output of this workshop will serve as our operational North Star for the coming year,” he said.Ms. Morrison praised the NDLEA’s impressive performance under Marwa’s leadership, citing record seizures, arrests, and convictions in recent years.

She described the workshop as “a declaration of our unified stand against transnational criminal organisations that seek to turn Nigeria into a drug trafficking hub.”

The DEA official highlighted plans to boost intelligence sharing, joint operations, and training for NDLEA officers. “Our goal is to ensure the collaboration between the DEA and NDLEA is proactive and geared toward results disrupting drug financial networks and taking down high-level targets,” she said.

Both agencies expressed optimism that the enhanced collaboration would deliver tangible results in protecting communities and securing a safer future for both nations.
