Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 58-year-old Uzoma Valentine Ilomuanya, a high-profile fugitive wanted for drug trafficking by both Nigerian and British authorities for more than 15 years.
The arrest occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, in Lagos during a precision operation by the NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit (SOU).
The capture marks a major success in dismantling international drug networks that have long used Nigeria as a base.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the operation as a “significant breakthrough” and a clear message to criminals.
“This arrest serves as a stern warning to those who think they can hide behind borders to escape justice,” he said in a statement issued through Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.
“The long arm of the NDLEA will eventually catch up with those who undermine our nation’s health, security, and future.”
Ilomuanya’s criminal record spans two decades:In February 2003, he was convicted in the United Kingdom for drug trafficking and sentenced to nine years, but released after serving only two years following an appeal.
In July 2011, he was arrested again in the UK on drug charges, jumped bail, and fled to Nigeria.
In November 2018, NDLEA operatives raided his properties in Imo State and Lagos, discovering two clandestine methamphetamine laboratories and seizing 77.960 kg of the drug.
Charged in a Federal High Court in Lagos, he absconded while on bail and remained at large until now.
Marwa commended the officers for their professionalism and reiterated the agency’s focus on intelligence-led operations and international cooperation.
“We remain unwavering in our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks operating within Nigeria,” he stated.
The arrest is expected to lead to fresh charges and underscores the NDLEA’s determination to prevent Nigeria from becoming a safe haven for global drug offenders.
