The National Police Council has officially confirmed Olatunji Disu (also known as Tunji Disu) as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), ratifying his appointment as the 23rd chief of the Nigeria Police Force.
The confirmation was made during a meeting of the Council on Monday, March 2, 2026, chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
The session, attended by state governors, unanimously endorsed Disu's nomination following his earlier designation as Acting IGP.
President Tinubu had appointed Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24 or 25, 2026 (reports vary slightly on the exact date), after the resignation of the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
In line with constitutional requirements under the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act, the National Police Council's approval is a key step before a substantive appointment.
Following the endorsement, Disu's name is expected to be transmitted to the Senate for screening and final confirmation.Disu, a seasoned police officer with over three decades of service, previously served in key roles including as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
He was also the former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and most recently led the Federal Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (FCIID) in Lagos before his elevation.
The development marks a swift transition in Nigeria's top police leadership, with Disu now set to assume full command of the force pending Senate approval.
