Bello Matawalle, former governor of Zamfara, says he will not contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.
Matawalle, the minister of state for defence, noted that he
will support the re-election of Dauda Lawal.
He made the declaration on Tuesday in Gusau, the state
capital, during the official reception of Governor Lawal into the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
On March 9, Lawal, who succeeded Matawalle as governor,
resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His defection followed an appeal court ruling affirming a
federal high court judgement that restrained the PDP from conducting its
national convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan.
The governor cited lingering litigation and internal crisis
within the PDP as reasons for his move to the APC.
At the reception, which was led by Kashim Shettima, the
vice-president, Matawalle endorsed Lawal as his sole candidate for the
governorship seat.
“I will give my best to support Governor Dauda Lawal, Insha
Allah. I believe Zamfara will be better now as we come together with a shared
commitment to work for the collective good,” Matawalle said.
“For the first time, all former governors of Zamfara State,
alongside the incumbent governor, are united under one political platform.”
Matawalle noted that with the party’s strengthened unity,
Zamfara is poised to deliver the highest votes for President Bola Tinubu in
2027.
Matawalle called on all stakeholders, supporters, and
well-wishers across Zamfara to rally behind Lawal and give “maximum
cooperation” to ensure the success of the administration.
He also commended Tinubu, describing him as an inclusive
leader whose listening ability, merit-driven approach, and political foresight
have positioned the APC as the “most formidable political force in Africa”.
Barau Jibrin, the deputy senate president, described Lawal’s
defection as a defining moment heralding a new political dawn for the
north-west region.
“On behalf of APC governors, the Executive Governor of Imo
State, Hope Uzodinma, assured Governor Lawal of their support, while
reaffirming continued loyalty to President Tinubu. He described the development
as a ‘win-win’ for Zamfara State and a moment of collective commitment,” he
said.
While presenting the APC flag to Lawal, Nentawe Yilwatda, the national chairman,
noted that the party continues to attract visionary leaders due to its
commitment to order, progress, and national development.
According to him, the APC remains a platform where
patriotism and ideas thrive,” the statement added.
