Makinde, Kwankwaso Hold Talks as PDP Reconciliation Stalls

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, both prominent figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have met with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso amid stalled reconciliation efforts within the PDP and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The meeting took place in Kano at Kwankwaso's residence on Miller Road during the 10th annual Dandalin Kwankwasiyya event, officially tied to Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

Also in attendance were Senator Seriake Dickson, National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Although described as a Sallah gathering, credible sources close to Kwankwaso indicated that high-level political consultations occurred, focusing on 2027 election strategies, political alignments, and realignments.

One source noted: “Because of the Electoral Acts and the deadlines for movement of politicians, high-level consultation is still ongoing... It’s part of the consultation ahead of the 2027 election... Other matters pertaining to 2027, political alignment, and realignment among them will be discussed.”

The discussions come as PDP reconciliation between the governors’ faction (led by figures like Tanimu Turaki SAN) and the bloc loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike remains deadlocked.

The party has been divided for nearly a year following rival conventions: the governors’ faction held one in Ibadan on November 16, 2025, electing Turaki’s National Working Committee, while Wike’s faction formed a National Caretaker Working Committee in December.

Recent court rulings have complicated matters. On March 9, 2026, the Court of Appeal upheld a Federal High Court decision nullifying the Ibadan convention for violating relevant laws and the PDP Constitution.

Another panel encouraged amicable resolution, but recent statements show deepening divisions.Makinde has been vocal against aligning with Wike’s group, stating:

“Anyone dealing with Wike and his group in any guise means you have also agreed to support President Tinubu for 2027... They have the government behind them, the judiciary behind them, and INEC behind them, but we have the people behind us.”

Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed countered that there are “no irreconcilable issues,” with ongoing reconciliation efforts through party mechanisms.

The Wike-backed faction accused the Turaki group of plotting to undermine the scheduled PDP national convention on March 29-30, 2026, including potential court injunctions, vowing the event would proceed.

The Turaki camp dismissed the claims as blackmail and reaffirmed commitment to talks.

The meetings highlight opposition leaders exploring broader coalitions involving PDP governors, NNPP, Labour Party elements, and others to challenge the ruling party ahead of 2027, as internal PDP crises persist and judicial decisions favor one side.
