Kefas orders probe into alleged corruption at Taraba Varsity amid strike

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba state, has ordered the immediate constitution of a committee to investigate alleged corruption at the Taraba State University, with particular focus on the institution’s accounting department, as the university grapples with an ongoing indefinite strike.

The directive was issued weekend when the governor received a five-year peace development plan from the Bureau for Conflict Management Board at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.

Addressing stakeholders at the event, Kefas linked the lingering crisis at the university to what he described as financial misconduct within the institution. According to him, individuals allegedly fueling the unrest may have vested interests tied to questionable financial dealings.

The governor stated that his administration would not tolerate any form of corruption undermining the integrity and stability of state-owned institutions, emphasizing that transparency and accountability remain central to his reform agenda.

As part of immediate steps, Kefas directed the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Barr. Gebon Timothy Kataps, to retrieve documents from previous investigative panels set up to examine activities at the university — particularly reports relating to the accounting department.

Sources within the state government indicate that the review of past findings is expected to guide the newly constituted committee and ensure continuity in the investigative process.

The development comes at a critical time for the university community, as the indefinite strike has disrupted academic activities and heightened concerns among students and parents.

Observers say the probe could mark a turning point in resolving the crisis, depending on the scope, transparency, and speed of the investigation.
