The Kebbi State Government has directed all political appointees planning to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
The directive was issued through a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), dated March 2, 2026, and signed by Director of the State Executive Council, Kabiru Hassan Wasagu.
It was sighted by journalists on Monday. The circular states: “The directive is in line with extant laws and government regulations guiding the participation of public office holders in partisan politics. All affected officials are to tender their formal letters of resignation to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government on or before March 31, 2026, for necessary action.”
The order affects a wide range of officials, including the Chief of Staff, commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants, chairmen and members of statutory commissions, heads of extra-ministerial departments and agencies, permanent secretaries, local government chairmen, and other political appointees.
Accounting officers and heads of ministries, departments, and agencies have been asked to give the directive wide publicity, with strict compliance expected from all concerned.
This move is viewed as an early step in the political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
In Nigeria, public office holders are typically required to resign before actively participating in partisan politics to avoid conflicts of interest and ensure a level playing field.
Similar directives have been issued in other states during previous election cycles.
