Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has claimed that the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stems from his refusal to accept certain conditions offered by the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu conditions that Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho allegedly accepted.
In remarks reported on March 16, 2026, Sowore contrasted the approaches of the two separatist figures, stating that Kanu’s steadfast rejection of the terms has kept him imprisoned, unlike Igboho.
“Nnamdi Kanu is in jail today because he’s different from Sunday Igboho. If Kanu were like Sunday Igboho, he would be campaigning for President Tinubu in the Southeast now. Because it’s the same terms they gave to Igboho that he accepted and Kanu rejected over the last 10 years,” Sowore said.
He referenced his recent interaction with Kanu during a campaign visit to Aba the previous week, emphasizing their incompatibility for comparison: “I don’t know what he will do tomorrow, but the Kanu I went to campaign for in Aba last week it will be heresy to compare the two of them.”
Sowore criticized Igboho’s political shift, describing it as “Amala politics” or “chop I chop” (a transactional style common in Oyo State), and warned of potential consequences:
“But what Igboho is going to realize is that he’s going to be in the hall of infamy like the Nzeribes of this world... If he was ever relevant, Igboho just retired himself into the infamy of the people I mentioned, and his own might be worse because the world community might be coming for him very soon.”
The specific terms offered to both men were not detailed in the statement. Kanu has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021 following extradition, facing charges related to terrorism and treasonable felony.
Igboho, who faced similar charges earlier, has since aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and expressed support for Tinubu.
Sowore’s comments highlight broader debates on separatist movements, government negotiations, and political compromises in Nigeria’s ethnic and regional agitations.
No official response from the presidency, Kanu’s legal team, or Igboho has been reported on these claims.
