Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai returned to court on Tuesday after being granted temporary administrative bail to attend his mother’s burial, but faced further delays in two separate corruption-related cases.
El-Rufai first appeared at the Kaduna State High Court, where his arraignment on charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) was adjourned to April 10, 2026. The adjournment was necessitated by the absence of a co-defendant in the matter, which involves allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and related offences.
He subsequently proceeded to the Federal High Court in Kaduna for the hearing of his bail application in a separate case involving 10 counts of alleged fraud, money laundering, and abuse of office. The court, however, adjourned proceedings to Wednesday, April 1, 2026, after the prosecution indicated it had just filed a counter-affidavit. No bail decision was reached during Tuesday’s sitting.
El-Rufai was released from ICPC custody on compassionate grounds late last week to enable him to bury his mother, Hajiya Umma, who passed away in Egypt. He hosted fidau prayers in her honour before travelling to Kaduna for the court appearances. Following Tuesday’s proceedings, he was reportedly taken back into ICPC custody.
Background
The ICPC arraigned El-Rufai and co-defendant Joel Adoga at the Federal High Court on March 24, 2026, on charges bordering on financial misconduct during his tenure as governor. He had earlier been in ICPC custody since mid-February after his initial release by the EFCC.
The developments come amid heightened security in Kaduna and significant public interest in the high-profile cases. El-Rufai’s legal team is expected to continue pushing for bail at the resumed Federal High Court hearing tomorrow.
