The Kaduna State Government, under Governor Uba Sani, has issued a directive requiring all political appointees and government officials intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before Monday, March 23, 2026.
The order aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, which mandates that public office holders and appointees seeking to participate in party primaries or elections must step down from their positions to avoid conflicts of interest and ensure compliance with electoral laws.
A circular highlighting the directive has circulated widely, emphasizing that affected individuals must tender their resignations by the specified deadline to pursue their political ambitions without legal impediments.
This move comes amid preparations for the 2027 elections, as several states implement similar requirements for appointees.
In Kaduna, the directive follows recent resignations by some officials, including a former House of Representatives member who cited the Electoral Act as the reason for stepping down from his role as Counsellor on Infrastructure to contest in upcoming polls.
Governor Uba Sani has previously stated that he has no anointed candidates for the 2027 primaries and will not interfere in the All Progressives Congress (APC) selection process, urging aspirants to seek support directly from party members.
He has reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.
The directive is expected to trigger more resignations in the coming weeks as potential aspirants comply ahead of party primaries scheduled for later in the year.
