ISWAP Commander killed After Gun Battle With Army Troops in Borno

A high-ranking commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), known as Abu Muhammad, has died from injuries received in a recent clash with Nigerian Army troops in Banki, Borno State.

According to security and intelligence sources, Abu Muhammad, who oversaw insurgent operations in the Bulagaida cluster including Dikwa, Bama, and Mafa Local Government Areas sustained gunshot wounds during an attempted assault on military positions in Banki, close to the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

The insurgents launched an attack on troops deployed in the area, but the military forces successfully repelled the offensive, inflicting casualties and compelling the attackers to retreat. Abu Muhammad was among those wounded in the firefight and later succumbed to his injuries.

Reports indicate that the commander was buried on March 14 in the Yaganari area, where a substantial gathering of ISWAP fighters attended the funeral proceedings.

The elimination of prominent field commanders like Abu Muhammad typically disrupts insurgent command structures in the short term, though ISWAP has historically demonstrated resilience by swiftly appointing replacements to sustain their activities.

In related developments, sources noted a significant mobilization of terrorists toward the Amchille axis, involving large groups traveling on motorcycles and armed "buffalo" gun trucks. This movement points to heightened insurgent activity in the region.

Military officials stressed the importance of ramping up surveillance in Amchille and surrounding areas to disrupt potential regrouping efforts or retaliatory strikes against military outposts following the commander's death. Close monitoring of fighter movements and supply convoys remains essential to restrict insurgents' operational freedom and sustain ongoing pressure on their networks in the northeast.
