An Israeli air strike on Tuesday reportedly hit the building
housing Iran’s assembly of experts, a body responsible for electing the
country’s new supreme leader following Ali Khamenei’s death on Saturday.
According to the Times of Israel, Effie Defrin, spokesperson
of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), confirmed the strike.
It was unclear how many senior clerics were in the building
at the time, the paper reported, quoting an Israeli defence source.
However, Channel 12 News reported that none of the
assembly’s 88 members were present during the attack.
Defrin said the results of the strike were still being
examined.
Local media showed footage of the building severely damaged
in the strikes. The building was reported to belong to Iran’s assembly of
experts, but there was no confirmed information on casualties.
Tasnim, an Iranian news outlet which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), disputed the reports.
According to the media outlet, an informed source described
the reports as a “propaganda campaign by the Israeli regime and Hebrew media”,
adding that they are “totally false”.
“The source at the same time added that there was no such
meeting in that specific time,” the report said.
On Sunday, Iran declared the start of a transition process
after confirming Khamenei’s death.
The plans include the formation of an interim leadership
council, comprising President Masoud Pezeshkian; Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei,
head of the judiciary; and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a jurist of Iran’s Guardian
Council and head of the Basij, a volunteer paramilitary force.
