Indian Police Arrest Two Nigerians in Major Bank Hacking Cybercrime Case

Indian authorities have arrested two Nigerian nationals for their alleged involvement in an international cybercrime syndicate that hacked cooperative banks and siphoned off significant sums from financial institutions.

The suspects, identified as Modebe Joseph (42) and Sunday Okonkwo (35), were apprehended in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, by the cybercrime unit of the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate during a coordinated operation.

Police linked the duo to a cyber threat group known as "Solar Spider," which specializes in targeting banks with weak cybersecurity systems.

According to investigators, the group executed a major unauthorized transfer of approximately ₹7 crore (roughly ₦1 billion) from a cooperative bank account over the weekend of March 7-8, when the bank was closed.

This timing was reportedly chosen to delay detection and allow more time to launder or move the stolen funds.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shavya Goyal stated that the arrests reveal connections to a broader international network with operational links to criminal groups in Nigeria and South Africa.

Authorities believe the suspects were part of efforts to potentially siphon off up to ₹80 crore in related fraud attempts, though the immediate case centered on the ₹7 crore transfer.

The operation highlights ongoing challenges with cross-border cyber threats targeting vulnerable financial systems in India. Investigations continue to uncover the full structure of the syndicate and identify additional members.

The arrested individuals are in custody as probes deepen.
