Two hunters were on Tuesday killed by gunmen who attacked a convoy in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The victims were part of an entourage conveying the remains of three deceased hunters from Oro-Ago to Oke-Oyan when the attack occurred a few kilometres from their destination.
A local source, identified as Chief Odofin, confirmed the incident, explaining that the hunters were escorting the bodies of their colleagues to their hometown for burial when the convoy was ambushed.
He added that the intervention of local security personnel, including forest guards, police officers and other hunters in the area, helped to prevent further casualties.
“The attackers struck as the convoy approached Oke-Oyan, but prompt response from security operatives and local hunters curtailed the situation,” he said.
The bodies of the slain hunters were reportedly taken to a mortuary in Oro-Ago, while the convoy continued under security escort to Oke-Oyan for the burial of the deceased.
The incident comes amid growing security concerns in the area. On Sunday, gunmen attacked a church in the same local government, abducting several worshippers, some of whom were later rescued by security operatives.
Security stakeholders in the Kwara South Senatorial District have recently raised concerns over threats of further attacks, urging authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property.
