Governor Yusuf's Delegation Meets Emir Sanusi Amid Sallah Durbar Controversy

Barely hours after hosting top government officials for an Iftar at his Gidan Rumfa palace, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, engaged in a closed-door meeting with a delegation sent by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The development has heightened speculation regarding the Kano State government's position in the protracted emirship dispute.

The meeting was confirmed early Wednesday by the governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, via a Facebook post. It took place at the palace and included key officials: Secretary to the State Government Umar Ibrahim, Chief of Staff Sulaiman Wali Sani, and Dawakin Tofa himself.

Dawakin Tofa stated: “Shortly after the Iftar at Emir’s Palace, the Governor’s delegation had a closed door meeting with His Highness.”

The sequence of events comes as Kano prepares for Eid-el-Fitr festivities, including the centuries-old Sallah Durbar cultural procession, which remains shrouded in uncertainty due to the ongoing legal and traditional contest between Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi II in 2024 after repealing legislation that had fragmented the emirate and installed Bayero. Bayero continues to challenge the reinstatement in court, maintaining his claim to the throne and leading to conflicting narratives over legitimacy and authority.

Recent days have seen mixed signals from government quarters on the Durbar: a special adviser on chieftaincy affairs publicly backed Sanusi II as the legitimate Emir to lead the event, while other officials emphasized the matter's sub judice status and urged caution to avoid prejudicing judicial processes or escalating tensions. Bayero's supporters have announced preparations from the Nassarawa mini palace, raising concerns of potential parallel processions.

Many residents and observers interpret the governor's team attending the high-profile Iftar where Sanusi II hosted prominently and the follow-up private meeting as a strong indication of the administration's continued recognition and support for Sanusi II, even as the legal battle persists.

With Eid approaching, attention has turned to whether the Durbar will proceed smoothly, under whose leadership it will be conducted, and how authorities will navigate the divisions to maintain peace and unity during the celebrations.
