Gov Yusuf's aide calls for patience as absence of red cap sparks debate

The spokesperson to the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, has dismissed speculations surrounding the governor’s recent public appearance without the symbolic red cap associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The clarification follows the governor’s outing in Yola, capital of Adamawa State, where he attended a gathering with other prominent personalities.

Governor Yusuf’s appearance without the traditional red cap had sparked discussions in political circles, particularly amid the ongoing political rift between him and his political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Reacting to the development, Dawakin Tofa said there had been no directive for supporters of the governor to stop wearing the red cap, describing the Yola outing as a special event.

The statement said: “There has not been any instruction to remove the red cap. This was a special outing in Yola, Adamawa State, where distinguished guests dressed in a particular style. Let us wait; everything has its time.”

The red cap is widely recognised as the symbol of the Kwankwasiyya political movement led by Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and a key political figure in northern Nigeria.

However, after the recent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Yusuf and his followers have continued to maintain the red cap, a move political commentators have described as unusual.

Dawakin Tofa’s comment is seen as an attempt to downplay the magnitude of the rift between Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso, as political observers continue to monitor developments.
