Gunmen ambushed security forces in the Giro Masa community of Shanga Local Government Area, Kebbi State, on Tuesday night, killing nine soldiers and one policeman, along with some civilians.
Two military gun trucks were also set ablaze during the assault.
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State confirmed the tragic incident on Wednesday while addressing journalists after visiting the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, where the victims' bodies and injured personnel were taken.
Describing the attack as both sad and barbaric, the governor paid tribute to the fallen security personnel, who he said were bravely protecting lives and property in the state.
“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation,” Governor Idris said.
He added that the Kebbi State Government would not relent in its efforts to safeguard citizens.
The governor assured that the state would cover the medical bills of all injured victims and provide necessary support to the families of the deceased.
He also offered prayers for the souls of those killed and reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across Kebbi State.
The ambush reportedly occurred when troops, acting on a tip-off from residents, were dispatched to the area and came under sudden attack en route.
Details about the perpetrators remain under investigation, with some reports linking the assailants to groups operating in the region.
This incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Kebbi State. Governor Idris urged calm among residents while emphasizing collaborative efforts with security agencies to restore peace.
