Salihu Yakasai, former Director-General of Media and Communications to ex-Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Yakasai announced the defection in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Monday, March 23, 2026.
He described the move as a collective decision reached after consultations with family, friends, and other political associates.
In his statement, Yakasai said:
“After advising and contacting family and friends and other political activists, we have decided to join the ADC Party New Journey! Already, I submitted my exit letter from APC and registration in our new party ADC.
"Those interested in joining the ADC party can register through party link shortly you will get your membership card! We pray to God that this is the best, and may the ADC establish government above and beyond, and may it be a blessing to all Nigerians amen!”
The defection comes amid growing momentum for the ADC, which recently welcomed nine senators from various parties in mid-March 2026, positioning it as an emerging opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yakasai has a history of political shifts; he previously left the APC in 2022 to join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), where he contested as its gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Kano election, before eventually returning to the APC.
This latest move highlights ongoing realignments within Nigeria's political landscape, particularly in Kano, as parties position themselves for future contests.
No immediate response from Ganduje or the APC was reported regarding Yakasai's defection.
