Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) camps are experiencing fresh tension and uncertainty following the elimination of a senior commander, Modu Kunduli, by troops of Operation HADIN KAI during a failed attack on an Army Forward Operation Base in Mayanti village, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that Kunduli was neutralised last week while leading the assault on the military position in Mayanti.
His death is expected to create a major leadership gap within ISWAP, especially in the Sambisa Forest axis, where he was valued for his extensive knowledge of the local terrain and fluency in Fulfulde, Kanuri, and Marghi languages.
Kunduli had been a high-profile figure in the insurgency for over a decade, initially operating under Boko Haram founder Abubakar Shekau before defecting to ISWAP shortly after Shekau’s death in 2021.
He was notorious for orchestrating attacks on communities across Borno and Adamawa states. In Borno, he terrorised villages in Askira Uba Local Government Area, including Lassa, Multaku, Uvu, Wamdeo, and Ruimirgo and was linked to raids on Vita, Yamtage, Izge, Pulka, Warabe, Limankara, and Ubawa in Gwoza Local Government Area.
Beyond Borno, Kunduli maintained operational control over Galta, a strategic border community connecting Adamawa and Borno, and exerted influence over large areas in Madagali and Michika Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.
His deep familiarity with Sambisa Forest terrain and strong command presence enabled him to lead multiple ISWAP branches across the northeast region.
The elimination of Kunduli marks a significant setback for ISWAP, disrupting its command structure and severely hampering the group’s ability to plan and execute coordinated attacks in Borno and Adamawa.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have intensified operations in the area, conducting aggressive patrols and exploitation missions to prevent surviving insurgents from reorganising.
Military sources have reassured residents that the offensive will persist until the remnants of the terrorist group are fully neutralised.
