Former Minister Uche Nnaji Honored as Women Empowerment Champion of the Year


Immediate past Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has been named Women Empowerment Champion of the Year for his consistent advocacy and contributions to the advancement and welfare of women in Nigeria.


The award was presented during the “Her Excellence & Award 2026” ceremony in Abuja, which also recognized 50 outstanding women for their excellence and impact across various sectors.


Represented by Basil Ani, Nnaji expressed gratitude for the honour and described women’s empowerment as both a moral duty and a vital driver of national progress.“I am deeply honoured by this recognition. It is a reminder that empowering women is not just a policy objective but a moral and social responsibility that strengthens families, communities and the nation,” he said.“


"Throughout my years in public service, women have stood as strong partners and pillars of support. Their resilience, intelligence and commitment to nation building remain invaluable.”


Nnaji commended Nigerian women for their indispensable role in holding families and society together, and pledged to keep advocating for their inclusion, equal opportunities, and leadership in every sphere of national life.


“I will continue to lend my voice and support to initiatives that promote women’s inclusion, equal opportunities and leadership in all sectors of our national life,” he added.


The event brought together prominent dignitaries and champions of women’s rights, including:

Dame Julie Donli (Founder, Roost Foundation; former DG, NAPTIP)   

Jennifer Jea Serrano (Founder, The Unity Project Nigeria)   

Dr. Bunmi Obakoya (Founder, Bunmi Obakoya Foundation)

Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu Ph.D (former Minister of State, FCT)
